How to play Sudoku
A Sudoku is a 9 × 9 grid divided into nine 3 × 3 boxes. Some squares start filled in, and you fill in the rest so that three rules hold.
That’s the whole rulebook. There’s no arithmetic involved, so the digits could just as well be letters or colours. A well-made puzzle has exactly one solution, and you can reach it by logic alone, without guessing.
Techniques, from Easy to Expert
Harder puzzles give you fewer digits to start with and need more advanced reasoning. These are the techniques each level calls for.
- Easy
- Scanning. Pick a digit and look along the rows and columns that already contain it. When a box has only one square left where that digit can go, fill it in. If a row, column or box is missing just one digit, that one is free.
- Medium
- Singles. With fewer starting digits you need two kinds of single: a square where only one digit fits, and a digit that fits in only one square of its row, column or box.
- Hard
- Notes, pointing and pairs. Pencil in the candidates for each square. If a digit’s candidates inside a box all sit in one row or column, it can’t go anywhere else along that line, and the same works the other way round. When two squares in a row, column or box share the same two candidates, or two digits can only go in the same two squares, they pair off: nothing else goes in those squares, and those digits go nowhere else in the group.
- Expert
- Triples, XY-wings and swordfish. Patterns that span several rows, columns and boxes rule out candidates that simpler methods can’t reach. Take your time with these.
Every puzzle on this page can be solved with the techniques above, without guessing. Tap any filled square in the puzzle and every matching digit lights up, which makes scanning much quicker.
Questions
Do I need the internet to play?
No. All 1,000 puzzles are stored on your phone, so you can play in flight mode or with mobile data switched off. When you are online, the free version shows ads.
Is it free?
Yes. The game is free and supported by ads. If you’d rather not see them, a one-time purchase removes them. The purchase is linked to your Google account, so it comes back if you reinstall the app with the same account.
Will I lose my progress if I close the app?
No. The app saves your game as you play, including your notes and the timer, and your statistics stay on your phone. Uninstalling the app deletes them.
Can I play on an iPhone or a computer?
The app is for Android. On any other device you can play the puzzle at the top of this page in your browser. Once the page has loaded, you can keep playing even if your connection drops.
What data does the app collect?
Your games, settings and statistics stay on your phone. The ads in the free version come from Google AdMob, which receives information such as your device’s advertising ID and IP address. The privacy policy explains exactly what is shared and how to control it.
I found a bug or have an idea. Who do I tell?
